Our President's editorial

What if living in harbours gave us a different view of the World?

Edito

Isn't a gaze turned towards the open sea tirelessly curious about what is hidden  behind the horizon line? Aren't these people from the coast moved by their will to discover? Now that most of the Earth's surface is known, how can these people quench their thirst for exploration? Possibilities are unlimited: the knowledge of others, the discovery of new cultures and experiences...

Our network was born from this quench and quest. However, this thirst for discovery is not exclusive to the people from the coast. Let's not forget that harbours feed and nurture entire regions. Hence our vast ambition and adventure!

What differentiates us from an ordinary network is the bond of friendship that has been forged in each harbour over the past 20 years, a human warmth born of exceptional encounters which the web helps us maintain but which it cannot replace. Without these strong relationships between men and women, we would only be doing business, and "Si Tous Les Ports Du Monde" (what if all harbours in the World)... would only be a catchy but meaningless title. The strength of the network lies in the human relationship. Let's stay true to ourselves, let's keep the network alive.

History of the network

What if living in harbours gave us a different view of the World?

Creation of the network

Loic FREMONT

Before being a network, Si tous les Ports du Monde was first a biennial festival. In 1997, Loïc Frémont, then director of the Saint-Malo theaters, launched the first edition of a festival gatheringculture, tourism, economy and gastronomy, with the support of the town of Saint-Malo and its mayor René Couanau, and with the support of the General Council and its president Pierre Méhaignerie.

These cities were not chosen by coincidence, as each shares a historical link with Saint-Malo. The three editions of the "Portsdumonde" festival were undoubtedly successful. Nevertheless, the organizers considered that the frequency of this event, twice a year, was too spaced out to meet the demand for bonding. The network was born from this rich experience, from these first conclusive meetings... Since then, we were joined by Gaspé, Montreal, Quebec, Abidjan and Tokoname (Japan).

A network in motion

In 2003, Si tous les Ports du Monde becomes a real economic and cultural network between its members cities. A network of national and international partners isborn. This network facilitates meetings and interactions between the various economic actors (companies, chambers of commerce, etc.), organizes cultural exchanges, notably during concerts organized in the member port cities, and offers "summer schools" bringing together young people from the various port sites in order to promote talents. Once a year, the members of the network meet in a General Assembly in one of the member city, to discuss the decisions taken during the year and to decide on future orientations. These meetings have been held in Saint-Malo, Marseille, Sønderborg, Cadiz, Glasgow, Dublin, Gaspé and Genoa. Until 2008, the presidency of the network remained in Saint-Malo.  The alternating presidency travels from one port to another.

An evolving network

2020 is a year of change for the network. A change made necessary by the arrival of young entrepreneurs and new individual members, as well as by Loïc Frémont's wish to passon the baton to a renewed team chaired by Georges Serre, after 20 years as an executive and founding member.

…and projects in the ship’s holds!

SiTous les Ports du Monde perpetuates and strengthens its partnerships with many cultural actors. With Saint-Malo Entreprises, a network of members committed to the economic development of its territory, with the association Femmes d'Avenir which supports the development of women's entrepreneurship in West Africa, with the association l'Encremalouine which brilliantly animates the literary meetings at the cultural centerLa Grande Passerelle, with the festival Etonnants Voyageursaround the film meetings, with the association Fetlyf which organizes the francophone festival Lycéens sur les Planches. New Summer Schools will once again bring together young talents from all over the world. A new digital communication platform will allow the members of the network to exchange, share, inform and be informed even better.

For more than 20 years, far from the beaten track, Si tous les Ports du Monde has united public actions, culture, economy and sport while facilitating interactions. Putting human at the center of the concerns remains rare, it is therefore a real strength of the network. The network will continue to rely on a solid foundation and an intangible principle: cultural exchanges, beyond our borders, are powerful vectors of economic development. Above all, the networkaims at encouraging the entrepreneurial spirit, giving opportunities to young talents and building bridges between all kinds of stakeholders. Faithful to its DNA, Si tous les ports du Monde... will continue to be inspired by the past and present histories of maritime sites around the world to write new ones.
